In its high speed range from 275 3000 RPM it puts out the full 1 HP, but in its low speed range 125 1000 RPM its just half the HP that is 1/10th the power of the Monarch at low speeds. Switching to back gear brings full torque down to around 200 RPM. Second, the Monarch (we are talking used machines now, not the new ones) has a 5 HP spindle drive with full torque, in direct drive mode, starting at 700 RPM going all the way up to its maximum speed 4000 RPM (Monarchs made prior to the late 50s only go to 2500 RPM). That is part of the reason a new Hardinge HVLH lathe today only costs about $55,000 half the price of the Monarch. Hardinge makes HLVHs in production runs of 20 or more at a time. Here is why I feel that way.įirst, if you want to buy a new Monarch EE lathe today, yes they are available new be prepared to spend around $110,000! Every Monarch EE is individually hand made like a Rolls Royce. My contention is that the Hardinge is the Cadillac of precision lathes and the Monarch is the Rolls Royce. Both are fine machines and both are suitable for close tolerance tool making applications, or any small job where precision is needed.
